InDesign Basics: Creating your First Document

 New Document Window    
 


 Set the Intent of your Document


 Print  Web  Digital Publishing  
Print Intent  New Document Window  PrintIntent Page Sizes  Page Size Menu Units  Millimeters
 Page Sizes  US Business Card, Letter,  A5, A4, A3   Custom Page Size Intent Print Custom Size   


 


 Page Size  Custom…  Custom Page Size 
 Width  Height  Name   standard European Paperback Book Width, 132 mm  Height, 197 mmPaperback Book OK.
 Orientation  Portrait  Landscape left-hand Portrait icon
 Facing Pages    always start on a Right-Hand single page.
 keep Facing Pages checked.

Step 4: Define Margins for your Document


 Margins   Margins  professional look ensure that text or images don’t disappear   recommended Margin measurements for a Paperback Book.
NOTICE  Inside Value  Wider  Outside Value 
Set the Margin values to:
 

 Define Columns for your Document


 Grid  Number of Columns  Gutter  visual guidelines.
 Newspaper   newspapers, newsletters or magazines New Document Window Pages  Masters

Step 6: Set the Bleed for your Document


So, first a common and really important question – WHAT IS A BLEED??
 Bleed  Print  don’t 
 Bleed  small amount of space extending beyond the very edge of the Document.  Trimmed    Trim unwanted white edge 
 Bleed  extend this color across the Trim seamless all-color edge.

 Book 3 mm Bleed  Top, Bottom  Outside  Inside Trim  Inside  0 mm
 Chain 
 New Document Window Slug

 Set the Slug for your Document


A second very common question – WHAT IS THE SLUG??
 Slug is not. 
 Slug  
 Bottom   Bottom  10 mm.

Step 8: Set the Number of Pages in your Document
